The change of brox

How the brox came to its current form over the years

Wednesday, February 14th, 2024

Summary

brox is characterised by its family atmosphere and does not want to lose this perk during processes of growth. The vision is to combine organic growth with the brox-identity. Various challenges must be overcome on the way, such as a close integration of new locations as well as the integration of externally regulated processes. To ensure this, new personnel must be recruited who not only have the necessary experience but also share brox’s values.

Initial situation

The beginning of 2018 marked the start of a change for brox. At that time, brox has already been an established consultancy for well-known DAX companies. Under the roof of brox, consultants who mostly worked independently but still wanted to enjoy the advantages of being employed had joined forces. The hierarchies were flat and the identity of the company was characterised by a familiar and friendly atmosphere among colleagues.

While consultants were concentrating on the core business, tasks relating to finance, controlling and marketing were outsourced to external companies. The acquisition of new projects has mainly been characterised by a strong network with partners and the successful completion of projects.

New locations

Until 2018, brox was located only active in Wolfsburg. In 2018 and 2019, a new company site was opened in Stuttgart and a virtual site in Mannheim. The site in Stuttgart brought new projects in the sector “IT Architecture & Infrastructure” and the Mannheim site added the competence of “Information Management” to its portfolio.

Both of the new locations enabled brox to expand its consulting portfolio and to position itself across Germany. However, the physical distance between the locations also brought new challenges. brox now had to be managed across several locations. Therefore, it was necessary to create structures that would maintain high quality within the new company structure.

The mission

Energized by the growth that the new company locations entailed, the company wanted to maintain its pace. The goal was to create the structures and processes required for organic growth. At the same time, special attention was paid to ensuring that the identity of brox, characterised by family-like cooperation, freedom and room for creativity, was not negatively affected. To ensure this, a balance had to be found between flexible and fixed processes and structures.

The individual locations also had to be more closely integrated with one another. While they already functioned very well as independent bodies, the communication between the locations was now to be significantly improved in order to extend the sense of community to the new structures. In addition, it was intended, that this would enable expertise spread throughout the company to be utilised for all projects.

Furthermore, the growing size of the company meant that processes that had previously been outsourced to external companies could be partially re-integrated internally. To avoid this being an additional burden to the consultants, suitable personnel had to be recruited.

Consolidation

The first step was to consolidate the existing consulting services in order to focus on the core competences. Four core areas were finally consolidated from the many small consulting packages that were offered at the various locations: “IT Sourcing Management”, “Information Management”, “IT Architecture & Infrastructure” and “IT Lifecycle Management”. This focusing made it possible to specify internally which areas brox can serve best and at the same time to offer a well elaborated portfolio to customers. With the intention of creating clear structures, the topics were allocated to the company sites. Wolfsburg consulted on “IT Sourcing and IT Lifecycle Management”, Mannheim on “Information Management” and Stuttgart on “IT Architecture & Infrastructure”.

To ensure the desired flexibility despite this fixed distribution of topics to locations, employees always had and have the opportunity to work on topics of other locations. For this to work well, the locations must be closely interlinked and productive communication channels must be brought in place.

Interlinking the locations

To strengthen the communication between the locations, an internal position was created to act as a central point of contact for cross-locational issues.

A quarterly newsletter has already been introduced and established as part of QuickWins. It contains various news from all the company’s locations, e.g. presentations of new colleagues. In addition, cross-site team events and meetings are organised so that employees can regularly see each other in person too, despite the physical distance.

We have already been able to see an effect of these measures: Colleagues from Stuttgart and Wolfsburg are jointly leading their customers to success.

Integration of externally managed processes

An essential part of the growth strategy is to integrate processes that were handled by external companies so far into brox by creating internal structures. This involved finding suitable personnel.

In this context, a new resource was recruited who is responsible internally as the central contact person for the topic of “Finance and Controlling” and works together with the external accounting department. Although this means that many processes are still handled externally, the internal resource can exert more influence on the execution of processes and their conformity with the company’s own strategy.

In addition, an experienced sales manager has been recruited who is responsible for acquiring new customers and projects. This has taken the burden off the partners and consultants, who can now concentrate more on their core work.

Juniorisation

For marketing and HR tasks, we specifically looked for juniors and working students who could take over the tasks of external companies in these areas. On one hand, this gave us more control over these processes and, on the other hand, working students were directly given challenging and significant tasks. This gave them the opportunity to grow with their tasks and later work on larger projects independently.

The first initiative was the social media team, which has been led by working students since the start of the project last year. They are organised as an independent team and report regularly to the management. Their tasks include fostering the social media channels, developing the website and finding and implementing new ideas in the area of marketing. In this context, for example, the ‘blog’ category has already been introduced on the website and a specialised webinar has been planned and implemented.

Conclusion

Brox has managed to grow steadily thanks to numerous named measures while retaining its identity at the same time. All of our new employees are welcomed into the family atmosphere and benefit at the same time from the new structures, which make it easier for them to join the company and their day-to-day work. They can also take part in internal initiatives and contribute to shape the company thanks to the flat hierarchies. The scope of creative action has continued to grow and the integration of external processes has made it easier to make the very most of it.

However, we are not done yet and so it is important to continue working on the tasks mentioned and to constantly work and address potential for improvement.

HEX-Festival: Hopes and Expectations

Thursday, July 14th, 2022

From July 4 – 8, 2022, the first HEX Festival took place at the MMI Klostergarten in Riddagshausen. Well-known speakers from science, culture, medicine and the media were invited to share hopes and expectations for our future. The aim was to enter into discourse and hear suggestions for concepts. The audience could actively participate and ask questions to the experts.

Day 1: Make The World Green Again!

Tatjana Schneider, Rebecca Freitag and Prof. Dr. Niko Paech

The evening began with presentations from an ecological perspective on the state of our planet and climate change. Can we save our world and what do we have to do? Deficits were pointed out and approaches were discussed. It quickly became clear: The awareness is there, but we are not always ready to leave our own comfort zone. Or are there other approaches that could make our lives easier and at the same time more environmentally friendly? Some measures sound better on paper than the effective impact they have. The speakers agreed: sustainability is the right and only way to ensure that we will still have a world in which further generations can live in the future.

Day 2: Future of the economy = future of humanity?

Anders Indset, Stefanie Ollenburg and Lucas Buchholz

We have learned that there is also an “alternative future”. Here we are challenged. Just take different approaches and think abstractly. Or what can we learn from the indigenous Kogi people? A closed community, but not separation from the rest of the world. This Colombian people live a conscious way of life and are still connected to the modern world.

Another talk was about our buying behavior. This directly affects companies and their strategies. We can change everything. We need to become “mindful”

Day 3: Can A.I. do art?

Jovanka von Wilsdorf, Stephan Baumann, Samy Deluxe and Dr. Matthias Röder

First, the audience got an introduction to this not so new topic. The idea of artificial intelligence dates back to the 1950s. Only the affordable technology of modern times makes the resources needed for this possible. Self-learning systems can help to fill in missing documents. But in the end, humans decide. Can we even distinguish between what is man-made and what is artificial? Or do we even need a “made by human” label in the end? Music also makes use of numerous systems to support humans. But it’s not creative yet. In a few years, it may look quite different. But who wants “… beef with an A.I.?”

Day 4: Wild Wild Web

Sascha Lobo, Isabelle Ewald Catrin Schröder-Jaross and Prof. Dr. Ina Schiering

The speakers explained the Internet and its development to us. Soon the question about our behavior in the www came up. How do we contribute with our habits to train the net? In the background our behavior is analyzed (consciously or unconsciously). At the same time, however, work is being done for us. We have it in our hands to use technology, but to consider the risks in the system.
After a short development timeline of the DeepNet, a real-time journey into the DarkNet was presented. On one side unsafe marketplace for illegal and forbidden things, on the other side message exchange for persecuted people in exile.

Day 5: Science & Truth

Ranga Yogeshwar, Prof. Dr. Melanie Brinkmann and Prof. Dr. Monika Taddicken

What is science and how can it help us? Technology has made a huge leap in recent years. In medicine, the analysis of large amounts of data can make accurate diagnoses.  A question for the audience: do we want to know the year we die? A quarter of the audience voted in favor. This brings the team of researchers more and more into the general focus.

But not every scientist is automatically trained for dialog in the media and on the Internet.  We need to enable exchange via equitable communication channels. In school, we should no longer just learn the facts, but the system of learning. It was discussed how this teaching affects us as individuals and how the work could look like in the future.

Conclusion:

It was an exciting and very stimulating week. A great format with interesting guests who gave a direct insight into their research and projects. The festival was perfectly presented in the beautiful nature of Riddagshausen Monastery, corona-like and yet idyllic between old walls. Interactively in direct exchange with the audience, new trends but also alternative concepts were discussed. It is important to stay in communication. Next year there will be a continuation. Further information can be found on the Homepage of the HEX-Festival.

Birches for climate neutrality

Planting birches in Latvia

Monday, January 17th, 2022

With birches to climate neutrality

We are always looking for forward-thinking solutions for our customers. Likewise, we also aim to act in a forward-thinking manner in our daily work – in this case, sustainability plays a particularly important role for brox, in addition to other aspects.

Over Christmas in 2020, all employees were able to enjoy a special surprise. Each Christmas present now included a certificate confirming that one birch tree for each employee has been planted. This campaign was very well received by our employees and thus paved the way for brox’s further development in the area of sustainability.

In order to live up to our ecological responsibility at corporate level, we decided to make the future of brox climate-neutral. In our search for cooperation partners, we chose “Not Hot Environmental Solutions GmbH”, because they act according to the “Verified Carbon Standard” and all projects are VERRA-certified. Through this, we could be sure that our investment would achieve the desired added value.

At the beginning of the project, our individual carbon footprint was calculated. This allowed us to determine how much CO2 needed to be sequestered to compensate. As a result, 1500 birches were planted on an area of one hectare in Latvia. In doing so, Not Hot selects soils that are mostly unsuitable for agriculture so as not to occupy important farmland. These areas are usually already overgrown with bushes and individual naturally regenerated trees. Before planting, the bushes are removed and the area itself is afforested. Reforestation is always carried out in accordance with sustainable forestry, which means that old trees, for example, remain on the site and are not felled.

Afforested area with planting ditches

We are happy to be part of this project and to support the creation of a valuable ecological CO2 reservoir. Over the next 40 years, the planted birch trees will bind around 500 tonnes of CO2. In addition, the newly emerging flora will initiate the renaturation of the areas and thereby enable the creation of a valuable ecosystem that will be home to the local wildlife for many years to come.

For the future of brox, the principle of sustainable action means maintaining the climate-neutral status and making an adequate ecological contribution. To this end, we aim to synchronise brox’s corporate growth with other such initiatives in the future. Keep an eye on our website to learn more about these initiatives.

Table Tennis

Sponsoring DJK Bingen-Büdesheim

Thursday, October 4th, 2018

Sponsoring of the table tennis department of DJK Bingen-Büdesheim

At the beginning of the 2018/2019 table tennis season, brox entered into a sponsorship cooperation with DJK Bingen-Büdesheim. In the course of this, the club was provided with new jerseys for the season. DJK Bingen-Büdesheim was selected on the basis of its social values. These are in line with our corporate philosophy and should therefore be promoted.

The DJK Bingen-Büdesheim is a large local club in Büdesheim and is also very involved in sports activities with children, young people, adults and senior citizens beyond the city of Bingen. A wide range of sports and dance styles are offered. Even newfangled sports like Quidditch are offered. In this way, everyone is given the opportunity for free development across the generations. The table tennis department is an integral part of the club and has existed since its reestablishment in 1956.

The mentality of the club is reflected in its guiding principle: “Sport for the sake of people. What really matters is not the victories. It’s the people.”

We are happy to be able to represent these values together with the club and hope to celebrate many more successes with the club in the future.
